A monitor light bar sits on top of your screen and lights the desk, not the screen. That's the whole point — you get light to read by without glare or a lamp eating desk space. Check curvature match, mount depth, and whether it has auto-dimming before you buy.
Most people light a desk badly. Overhead ceiling light throws shadows onto your keyboard. A desk lamp takes up space and shines into your eyes. Working in the dark with just monitor glow is worse still — the contrast between a bright screen and a dark room is what makes your eyes ache after two hours.
A monitor light bar solves a narrow problem well. Here's how to tell whether you need one, and what to check before buying.
What it actually does
It clips over the top bezel of your monitor and projects light forward and down onto your desk. The beam is angled so no light hits the screen itself.
That angle is the entire product. A desk lamp pointed at your keyboard will also bounce light off your display, washing out contrast and creating reflections. A light bar's asymmetric optics avoid that.
Two practical results: you can read paper notes and see your keyboard without squinting, and the wall behind your monitor stops being a black void, which reduces eye strain during long sessions.
Curved vs flat — this is where people get it wrong
Match the bar to the screen. A flat light bar on a curved monitor leaves gaps at the ends and the mount rocks. A curved bar on a flat monitor sits proud in the middle.
If you run a curved monitor — most 27" and larger gaming displays are — get a curved bar. Check the curvature rating too: 1000R, 1500R and 1800R are different curves, and a bar designed for one will sit imperfectly on another. Most curved bars quote a compatible range rather than a single figure.
Check your bezel depth before ordering
Light bars use a weighted counterbalance hook that rests on the back of the monitor. Two things break this:
- Very thin bezels. Some ultramodern monitors have less than 10mm of top edge, and the hook has nothing to grip.
- Rear-mounted cables or VESA arms. If your monitor has cables exiting the top rear, or a stand bracket that sits high, the counterweight may not seat flat.
Measure the depth of your monitor's top edge and compare it against the product spec. It takes thirty seconds and saves a return.

Powering it
Almost all light bars run on USB, drawing 5-10W. You can run it from a monitor USB port if your display has one, which keeps it on the same power switch as the screen.

Who shouldn't bother
Honest answer: if you work in a well-lit room during daylight hours and don't read anything on paper, a light bar won't change much for you. It earns its place in dark rooms, evening sessions, and setups where a desk lamp won't fit.
It's also not a replacement for ambient RGB lighting behind your monitor. Those do different jobs — a light bar lights your desk, bias lighting reduces the contrast between screen and wall. Plenty of setups run both.

- Curved or flat monitor — and the curvature rating if curved
- Top bezel depth in millimetres
- Monitor width, so the bar doesn't overhang awkwardly
- Spare USB port, or a plan for the cable
- Whether you actually want RGB, or just clean white light
